80th anniversary of the liberation of Novgorod

January 20th is not just a date for Veliky Novgorod. This day is considered the Day of the Liberation of the city during the Great Patriotic War.

When the soldiers of the Volkhov Front entered liberated Novgorod in 1944, they saw only its ruins. Sculptures of the once majestic Millennium of Russia monument were scattered in mud and snow all over the central part of the Kremlin. A pedestrian bridge was destroyed. The houses on the Commercial and Sofia sides lay in ruins – only about 20 of them survived in the whole city.

On this important day for us, we remember everyone: the soldiers who liberated the city, many at the cost of their own lives, all the rear workers involved in saving the city, the people who returned to it and literally stone by stone restored Novgorod from the ashes.

On January 20, Veliky Novgorod will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the city in the Great Patriotic War.
The program of the event includes a parade of military equipment, which will take place along the central streets of the city, an immersive performance "No one is forgotten, Nothing is forgotten."
The day will end at 21.00 with a fireworks display at the Victory Monument and the memorial complex "Heroes Liberators of Novgorod" on the Sofia embankment.
